Questions about HoldUp

Plain answers about what it costs, where your data goes, and what happens when the countdown ends.

Cost and signup

  1. You:

    Is HoldUp free?

    HoldUp:

Yes, right now. Putting something on hold is free and needs no account or signup.

Early access is free too: sign up with your email, no card needed. HoldUp will be $19/month per household after launch, and early access is limited to the first 100 households.

  2. You:

Will I be charged when it launches?

    HoldUp:

Not automatically. Early access never asks for a card, so there's nothing on file to charge.

Your bank and your data

  1. You:

Does HoldUp connect to my bank?

    HoldUp:

No. There's no bank login, no account syncing and no spending categories. HoldUp only knows what you type into the hold form.

  2. You:

    Where is my data kept?

    HoldUp:

Your hold and your not-spent total are saved in this browser's local storage. HoldUp has no accounts and no database of holds.

What leaves your device is a one-way code made from the email you give for early access (never the address itself), and usage analytics that show how the site is used, such as that a hold was made, its price and the cooldown you picked. Those analytics events don't name the item or include your reason or its link.

  3. You:

What if I clear my browser or switch phones?

    HoldUp:

Your hold lives only in the browser you made it in. Clearing this site's data deletes it, and it won't show up on another phone or computer.

How a hold works

  1. You:

How long does a hold last?

    HoldUp:

You pick when you make it: 24 hours, 72 hours or 7 days. The countdown starts the moment you save it.

  2. You:

Can I end a hold early?

    HoldUp:

No. Skip and Buy stay locked until the countdown ends, and the hold card shows exactly when they unlock. The wait is the part that helps.

  3. You:

    What happens after the cooldown?

    HoldUp:

Skip and Buy unlock on the hold card. Choose Skip and its price is added to your running total of money you didn't spend. Choose Buy and the total stays as it is.

HoldUp never buys or cancels anything for you. If you saved a shop link, it's there when you decide. There are no reminders yet, so open HoldUp in the same browser when the time is up.

  4. You:

How many things can I put on hold?

    HoldUp:

One at a time for now. Once you decide on it, you can put the next thing on hold.

  5. You:

How do you work out what it really costs?

    HoldUp:

Add your hourly pay and the price is divided by it, so you see how many hours of work it takes. Leave it blank and you see what else the same money buys instead: coffees out, takeout dinners for two or date nights, depending on the price.

Sharing with your partner

  1. You:

Does my partner need an account?

    HoldUp:

No. Share gives you a read-only link they can open in any browser. They see the item, the price, your reason and when the cooldown ends, with a note that it was shared by someone using HoldUp and isn't verified.

The hold travels in the part of the link after the #, which browsers don't send to a server. Your hourly pay and the shop link are left out.

  2. You:

Can my partner vote on a hold?

    HoldUp:

Not yet. For now the link is read-only. Partner voting arrives with early access, along with reminders and a shared history of what you both skipped.

It's free, there's nothing to sign up for, and your hold stays in this browser.
