What HoldUp is
HoldUp puts a pause between wanting something and buying it. You tell it what you're about to buy, pick a cooldown of 24 hours, 72 hours or 7 days, and decide once the cooldown ends.
It isn't a budgeting app, a bank or a financial adviser. Nothing on the site is financial advice, and the decision to buy or skip is always yours.
Your holds and this browser
You don't need an account. A hold, and your running total of money you didn't spend, are saved in this browser's own storage on your device. We don't keep a copy.
That means clearing your browser data, using a private window or switching devices removes them, and we can't bring them back because we never had them.
What you put in a hold
You're responsible for what you type into a hold: the item, its price, your reason, an optional shop link and an optional hourly pay. Keep it to your own plans.
The “what this really costs” line is arithmetic on the numbers you enter. It's an estimate to help you think, not a statement about your finances.
Sharing a hold with your partner
When you share a hold, HoldUp makes a read-only link. The item, price, reason and the time the cooldown ends travel in the part of the link after the #, which browsers don't send to a server. Your hourly pay and the shop link are left out.
Anyone who has the link can see that hold, so send it only to the person you mean it for. The person who opens it can't change the hold or decide it for you. Partner voting is being built for early access and isn't available yet.
What your partner sees with every hold

Early access and the price
Early access is a free signup with your email. There's no card and nothing is charged. Your browser sends only a one-way code made from your email so each signup counts once; the address itself isn't stored.
- HoldUp will be $19/month per household after launch. You'll only ever pay if you choose a paid plan yourself.
- Early access is limited to the first 100 households.
- Partner votes, reminders when a cooldown ends and a shared history are being built for early access. They aren't part of HoldUp today, and what ships may change.
Using HoldUp fairly
Please don't use HoldUp to:
- pressure, shame or harass anyone, including through a shared link
- put someone else's private details into a hold you share
- disrupt the site, overload it or try to get around how it works
An early product, as it is
HoldUp is new. We provide it as it is, and we may change, pause or stop parts of it as we learn what people need. We'll do our best to keep it working, but we can't promise it will always be available or free of mistakes.
As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for what you decide to buy or skip, or for holds lost when browser data is cleared. Nothing here takes away rights you have under the consumer laws where you live.
Privacy
A one-way code made from your email and a few usage events leave your device. Your email address and hold contents don't. The privacy notes explain exactly what is collected and why.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Using HoldUp after a change means you accept the updated terms.
That's everything. The best way to see how it works is to try it on something in your cart.
